St. George's Chapel, Windsor, has manuscripts relating to tenancies owned in the Hundred of Bray by the Cruchfield family. The Manor of Cruchfield is authenticated at 1220ca and the present Cruchfield House is still on the map. Currently Crutchfields live in High Wycombe. Some in that area are indicated as renown furniture makers. (Source: a letter from Mrs. Jill Nice of Dorset, England) 1664 May 1 Peter Crutchfield, Newgate prisoner reprieved to be transported to Barbados. Apparently was from London. A Captain Thomas Crutchfield, commander of the Lisbon Merchant of London was buried 7 Sep 1679 at St Michaels of Barbados. The name has been spelled in various ways such as; Corchfield, Crutchfield, Crutchfielde, Critchfield, Crotchfield, Crochfield, Crouchfield and Scritchfield. MEANING OF THE NAME The name "Crutch" or "Crouch" signifies "cross" and no doubt persons of the name of Crutchfield originally dwelt at or by a field of such shape. Other definitions are; a dweller at, or in, the field on a hill: one who comes from Crutchfield (hill field), in Berkshire. Crutch or Cruch is a hamlet in the parish of Hampton Lovett, about 2 miles north west of Droitwich in the district in Halfshire, County Worcester, England. It is essentially a rural area. This district was laid off in the shape of a cross and the "t" was added for euphony. It was a much traveled thoroughfare and it is said that a large cross that bore lighted torches was placed there by residents of the district and resulted in the name "Way of the Cross."
