Subject: Re: Crutchfield question

John,

I agree with the work by Page Nickell. Page and I had email contact several years ago and she shared many of the deed and court records she found.

Several records indicate presence of a John & Nancy Crutchfield in early Franklin Co. KY with the following children:
1. Martha Patsy Crutchfield: 1813 Dec 9 (KY) Marriage of daughter, Patsy M. Crutchfield, daughter of John to William Owens, Jr. John Crutchfield gives his consent.
2. Maria M. Crutchfield: 1819 July 6 Marriage Bonds Maria M. Crutchfield and James S. Hackley, Bondsman William Owen. Nancy Crutchfield's name written under name of Maria M. Crutchfield.
3. Thomas Ferguson Crutchfield

1810 Census Franklin Co. KY: John Crutchfield male over 45, 1 male 0-10 (Thomas, Son); 1 female 0-10 (Martha Patsy, Dau.); 1 female 10-16 (Maria, Dau); 1 female 45 over (Nancy, wife).

John Crutchfield died about 1816 in Franklin Co. KY. 1816 Aug 16 Court Records - Nancy mad[e] Admx. of goods/chattels. Commissioner appointed to appraise estate.

1816 Sept Court An appraisement of the estate of John Crutchfield, dec'd was returned to court and ordered to be recorded. Book F page 220.
Franklin Co. KY, Appraisements & Inventories Book 1(1795-1823) Crutchfield, John, Slave division, no date (http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyfrankl/app-set.htm).
In obedience of our? orders of the ??rshipful County of Franklin Co. [KY] to us directed we proceeded to review value and determine on the price of the negroes of John Crutchfield [dec'd?] allotting to the widow her one third & designating what negroes are to go to each child at their respective value and determine as follows. The negroes Rachel and child we value at $450. Boy Lewis at $350 making in all $800 which we allot to the widow, she paying to Wm Owens one of the heirs, $68 & 72? (60 & 02?)cents.
The Negroes Billy we value at $350 and boy John at $150 in all $500 which we allot to Thomas Crutchfield he to pay Wm Owens $11.13cts.
The negroes Edy we value at $350 and girl Aggey at $150 in all $500 which we allot to Maria Crutchfield she to pay Wm Owens $11.13cts and we finally allot to Wm Owens negro woman Amy at $400.00 and determine that he receive the sums as stated on the other side from the widow & two children, Thomas & Maria, amounting to $88.87cts which will make the share of Each child $488.87. 1 male 20-30 [Thomas?]
1 female 20-30 [wife]
1 female 60-70 [a grandparent?]

I wonder if Marian Crutchfield Sandsbury has confused the Thomas Crutchfield, son of Stapleton and Sarah Durett Crutchfield and brother of Robert Crutchfield, with Thomas Ferguson Crutchfield.

Robert, Stapleton and Thomas Crutchfield were sons of Stapleton & Sarah Durett Crutchfield as indicated in the following record: Virginia County Records Vol I page 947. Stapleton Crutchfield, Perkepley Parish, Spotsylvania Co, died June 17, 1788. Three eldest children -- John Crutchfield, Jane Lepscome, Agatha Woodfork; son Robert, son Stapleton, son Thomas, son Archilles; from district of Ky and county of Fayette; wife Sarah Crutchfield; youngest children Mary Noel, Robert, Stapleton, Thomas, and Achilles.

I have no record of Robert Crutchfield having anything to do with Franklin Co. KY.

Know all men by these presents that we, Robert Crutchfield and Stapleton Crutchfield of the County of Spostylvania and State of Virginia have, made, ordained Constituted and appointed Thomas Crutchfield of the County of Jefferson and State of Kentucky our true and lawful attorney for us and in our names to sell assign and transfer all the lands with their Several appurtenances in the State of Kentucky to which we may be entitled under the last will and Testament of our decd Father Stapleton Crutchfield which will is of record in the County Court of Spotsylvania and State of Virginia aforesaid - ?(Dish)? power also an attorney or attorneys under him the Said Thomas Crutchfield for that purpose to make and Substitute? and to do all lawful acts requisite for effecting the premises; hereby ratifying and confirming all that our Said attorney or his Substitute or Substitutes shall do therein by virtue hereof; So that our attorney or his Substitutes in any ??? and or transfer of our lands aforesaid, Shall in no wise whatever Grant or give no other than a Special Warrantee, conveying our rights only, and binding ??? our selves and our heirs.

Subject: Re: Crutchfield research

John,

I did not have your grandmother's name, however, my info indicates Charles T. Crutchfield, b. abt 1857 in TX, son of James Oscar & Frances Floyd Crutchfield of KY. Proving this line has been difficult and requires many records in the states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky.

I have info on Thomas Ferguson Crutchfield and wife Nancy Ann West and will try to present some significant portions to you below.

Richard Ignatius West who died abt 1772 in Caroline Co. VA leaving orphaned children:
Ignatius West - guardian samuel Burruss
John West - guardian William Young
Ann West - guardian William Young
William West - guardian Charles West
Alice West - guardian Charles West

James, Margarete, George & Thomas Crutchfield, orphaned children of Wm. Crutchfield, wards to guardian Richard West in 1759 (page 446 Colonial Caroline Co. VA by Thompson).

1759 Feb 8 Caroline Co. VA Court Order Book 1759-1763: At a Court held for Caroline County the 8th day of February 1759 "James Crutchfield an orphan of William Crutchfield being this day admitted to Choose a guardian made Choice of Rich'd. West and Anderson Lipscomb is appointed guardian to Margaret, George and Thomas Crutchfield under the age of fourteen years & by consent of parties it is ordered that Phillip Taylor, William Bowler, John Baynham & Sam'l. Burrus or any three of them divide the Estate of Wm. Crutchfield according to Law & to his will-----."

This James appears to be the son of William and Jane Stapleton Crutchfield of VA. One of his brothers was Henry Crutchfield who settled in NC, where James & brother Henry received Rev. War land grants. James is reported to have been with the Robertson Expedition at old Salt Lick, now Nashiville, TN. I have not found proof of this, but it seems likely because of his death there.

James Crutchfield, of Wm, married Sarah ___?. James killed by Indians in defense of Davidson Co. TN about 1783/84. 1784 July 30 Heirs of James receive from State of NC, 640 acre warrant

1784 Jul 20 Lincoln Co., KY (marriage bond), Sarah Crutchfield (widow of James) married David Floyd, Wm. Rice as surety.

1785 Spotsylvania Co. VA Stapleton Crutchfield, guardian to the orphans of James Crutchfield, deceased vs. James Dismukes, Thomas Terry (Debt).

1788 Oct 21, Lincoln Co., KY, Inventory and appraisal of the estate of James Crutchfield, dec'd, was returned and ordered recorded.

1789 Jul 21, John Bryant, Alexander Collier, Natham Lamme, and George Douglas, or any 3 of them, are to allot and set apart to Sarah Floyd, late widow of James Crutchfield, Decd, her dower in the estate of her decd husband. (Lincoln Co. KY Records by Michael L. Cook)

Signed by John Donelson, DS and Dan Smith, Survey Chainers: William Cartwright and ___Donelson (the names of George and William were x'ed out. This appears to indicate John was not a minor at this time and that brothers George & William were. Stapleton Crutchfield appears to have been guardian to all three.

Children of James & Sarah Crutchfield:

1) John Crutchfield, husband of Nancy Ann West, was born about 1769 in VA and died about 1816 Franklin Co. KY. 16 Aug 1816 wife Nancy was administrator of estate.
