William Crutchfield birth recorded in Abingdon Parish Register. See post for this elsewhere on this Forum.
Wm. married 1st Eleanor; their children William, John, Richard, Edmund (b. 1725) Crutchfield. Edmund's birth and baptism reported to be recorded at Christ Church, Middlesex Co. Va.
Wm. married 2nd Jane Stapleton Norman (widow of Thomas Norman) 9 Dec 1728. Jane's date of death is estimated to be about 1746. Their children, Stapleton, Mary, Henry and James Crutchfield.
Wm. is reported to have married 3rd Rachel Isbell. Their children; George (b. abt 1750), Martin, Margaret and Thomas. I have not seen the following: Caroline Co. Order Book 1759-1763, page 61, "10 Nov 1757 the last will and testament of William Crutchfield was presented to court by Rachael Crutchfield, executrix therein named." "Thursday 10 April 1760 An account of the (adm) of the estate of William Crutchfield, Dec'd returned and admitted to record. Wm. also had a sister named Rachel!!! Fun isn't it?
There appears to be some connection to a family named Isbell or Isaball. 10-12-1750 - Richard Crutchfield & wife Catharine ack. their deed indented to Daniel Isaball.
Crutchfield researchers do not appear to know if George was the son of Jane or Rachel.

Per Richard Crotwell:
William Crutchfields birth is recorded in the Abingdon Parish Register as follows on page 6 under the heading "Christenings in the year 1683. Wm the son of Rich & Hannah Critchfield born May 13th baptized soon after."
This document is in the Swem Library, College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. and is filed in the Tyler Family papers. It is a hand copy of the original made by Mr. Tyler about 1870. Another copy is with the William C. Stubbs papers there. They are in the Manuscripts and Rare Books section on the lower floor.

Correction to my previous post about the Abingdon Parish Register. The hand written copy was done by C. H. Lee, Jr. in 1892, not by Mr. Tyler about 1870. This original hand written copy was done in ink. It's pages have been pasted into a leather bound volume. There were two typed copies (on onion skin type paper)in the box with the hand written copy. There is a typed index. The hand written copy does not have an index. This is a large volumne.

Here is a letter I would like to share with all of the Crutchfield researchers that I received in Aug of 1999 that I had filed away and recently ran across:

On Dec. 13, 1745, the court directed that the road from the main road to the new church in St. Margaret's be cleared and a causeway constructed, with the people under Waller Chiles, John Potter, William Crutchfeild, Daniel Cockerham and Thomas Terry assisting Benjamin Faulkner, the overseer of the road; on Oct. 9, 1747, at the motion of Benjamin Falkner, the court ordered that the gang under Capt. Chiles be added to Falkner's gang, and also William Falkner, John Godby, the widow Anderson, Robert George and John Butler's people, and that Benjamin Falkner be overseer of both roads. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1740-1746, p. 547; Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1746-1754, p. 72.
The first appearance of Daniel Isbell in the Caroline County court order books is on Oct. 12, 1750, when Richard Crutchfield and Catherine his wife acknowledged a deed to Daniel Isbell. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1746-1754, p. 235. This was not the only sale of land from the Crutchfield family to Daniel Isbell. On Aug. 8, 1765, Stapleton Crutchfield and Agathy his wife acknowledged in court a deed of land to Daniel Isbell. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1765-1767, p. 106.
On Nov. 10, 1757, "Daniel Isbell one of the executors nominated of the last will and testament of William Crutchfeild, deceased, came into court and refused to take upon [sic] the burden of the executorship of the estate." The will was presented in court by Rachael Crutchfeild, named the executrix in the will, and she was granted certificate for obtaining a probate. Two of the witnesses of the will, John Mason and James Mason, came into court and proved the will, declaring also that they saw Melchizedek Braime witness the will in the presence of the deceased. Henry Crutchfield, being admitted to choose a guardian, made choice of Daniel Isbell, who acknowledged a bond for the guardianship. Henry Crutchfield then bound himself by indenture to James Beadles. The court appointed that Matthew Pettrasse, John Baynham, William Dudley and Phillip Taylor, or any three of them, were to appraise the estate of William Crutchfeild. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1755-1758, pp. 312-13. Daniel Isbell's position as an executor of the will, and a guardian of one of the orphans, suggests that he may have been a son-in-law of William Crutchfeild.
On Jan. 12, 1758, Rachel Crutchfeild, relict [i.e., widow] of William Crutchfeild, came into court and renounced any benefit or advantage she might claim by the will of her deceased husband. An inventory of the estate of William Crutchfeild was returned and admitted to record on Jan. 13. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1755-1758, pp. 324, 327. On Feb. 8, 1759, James Crutchfield, an orphan of William Crutchfeild, chose Richard West as his guardian, and Anderson Lipscomb was appointed guardian to Margaret, George and Thomas Crutchfield, who were under the age of fourteen years. By consent of the parties, it was ordered that Phillip Taylor, William Bowler, John Baynham and Samuel Burrus, or any three of them, divide the estate of William Crutchfeild according to law and his will. On Aug. 9, 1759, a division of the estate of William Crutchfeild, deceased, among his widow and children was reported to the court and admitted to record. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1759-1763, pp. 2, 68. A further division of the estate according to Crutchfeild's will was ordered on Dec. 13, 1766, when the court designated Richard West, Daniel Isbell, William Battaley and Jeremiah Rawlings Jr., or any three of them, to
divide the estate according to his will, and to make a report to the court. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1765-1767, p. 440.
Crutchfeild had resided for some time in the area along Reedy Creek. On June 8, 1739, he had land adjoining the water grist mill which was operated by Robert Baber on Long Branch. Baber belonged to the Reedy Creek settlement. On that date, the court ordered that Baber be put in possession of an acre of the land of "William Crutchfeild of this county," adjoining Baber's dam for a water grist mill on Long Branch. The order to view and lay off the acre had not been complied with on Feb. 8, 1739/40, at which time the court ordered that unless the previous order was performed before the next court, the order would be vacated. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1732-1740, pp. 540, 580-81; cf. pp. 465, 524. The court on Nov. 10, 1738 required that Robert Baber post bond to appear at the next court to answer a complaint against him by William Cruchfeild. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1732-1740, p. 506.
William Cruchfeild was appointed surveyor of a road in the room of Robert Baber, on Feb. 11, 1742/3. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1740-1746, p. 157. Crutchfeild's residence was evidently on the road extending westwards from Reedy Church to join the major north-south artery from Chesterfield to Needwood, because his people were ordered on Dec. 13, 1745 to assist Benjamin Faulkner in the construction of a causeway between the main road and the new church in St. Margaret's. Faulkner was also to be assisted by the people under Waller Chiles, John Potter, Daniel Cockerham and Thomas Terry. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1740-1746, p. 547.
The will of "Daniel Isbel of Caroline County," dated Nov. 26, 1767, has survived. He nominated "my wife Ann executrix and my son-in-law John Woolfolk, my sons James and George, executors of this my last will and testament." The witnesses were John Baynham, Henry Crutchfield, Charles Mason and John Meacham. The will gives directions that delayed the division of his estate. The testator specified that his son James was to inherit the land purchased from Stapleton Crutchfield, and part of the land purchased from Richard Crutchfield, but only after Daniel's son George arrived at the age of twenty-one. George was to inherit lands on the east side of Dining Swamp, but would receive these lands only after the death of Daniel's wife. Will of Daniel Isbell, George Family Papers, accession 24642, box 7, Personal Papers, Virginia Library.
A deed from Martin Crutchfield and Rachel Lipscomb to Jacob Faulkner was proved on Sept. 12, 1776, by the oaths of William Collins, John Glazebrook and George Isbell, witnesses to the deed. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1772-1776, p. 628.
Stapleton Crutchfield, guardian of George Crutchfield, brought suit against William Collins and James Isbell for debt, but the court dismissed the suit on July 12, 1782, because the plaintiff failed to prosecute it. Caroline County, Virginia Order Book 1781-1785, p. 101.

I hope that it will help everyone.
