bullet  General Notes:

Josceline had descended directly through Gerberga, who was the daughter of Charles, Duke of Lorraine, from Charlemagne, king of the Franks and later Emperor of the Romans. Josceline was also King Henry II's brother-in-law (through his sister Alice of Louraine, King Henry II's second wife). Agnes demanded upon marraige that he give up either his family name or his coat of arms. Josceline agreed to assume the name Percy and to incorporate the ancient royal coat of arms of Brabant, his father's family, into the Percy shield.

Josceline, from his sister and his brother-in-law, the King, received the great estate of Petworth in Sussex. He held several important posts under King Henry II, but when King John came to power, Josceline bitterly opposed his evil excesses.

Josceline's son, Richard, was one of the barons who rose against King John and was one of the 25 barons named to enforce the Magna Charter under Henry III. However, it was Josceline's and Agnes' other son Henry de Percy, who married Isabel de Bruce, of Skelton. This is the Bruce family which later supplied Scotland with kings. By marrying Isabel, Henry fell heir to the privilege and duty of escorting the lady of Skelton Castle to Christmas mass each year and afterwards dining with her. ========================================================================== ==================================== from "The Percy Family in England" p. 22: Received the great estate of Petworth in Sussex from his brother-in-law, King Henry I. He held several important posts including castellan at Arundel.
